Cross stitch is an embroidery style that uses two diagonal stitches to form an x or cross. These crosses form to create a picture. Counted cross stitch has been around for hundreds of years and is one of the oldest forms of embroidery, traditionally using linen and thread to create samplers of words and sayings. Nowadays cross stitch kits can be either counted, printed or stamped and with the enormous choice of designs and kits available, the possibilities are endless.

Tapestry or Needlepoint is a form of embroidery where wool or yarn is stitched through mesh canvas. Although a variety of stitches can be used, most tapestries are worked using tent or half cross stitch. The design is usually printed directly onto the canvas but counted tapestry is available.
As finished tapestry or needlepoint is usually quite stiff, it is normally used for wall hangings, cushions, seat covers and bags.
The fabric or canvas count for tapestry is generally large count to accommodate the use of wool or yarn, this can affect the smaller details, very fine tapestry or needlepoint is known as petit point.

Blackwork embroidery is one of the easiest forms of counted thread embroidery and dates back many centuries. The technique uses outline and infill stitches to create complex looking geometric patterns in any colour, despite the misleading name. Originally used to enhance clothing, Blackwork is now available in a wide range of designs and can be used to create fantastic needlework pieces. We have a good range of Blackwork kits to choose from including a range of Blackwork combined with counted cross stitch kits by Classic Embroidery, the combination of the different stitches looks stunning.

The Happy Cross Stitcher is a family run business that was first opened in 2002 in Keighley, West Yorkshire by Keith and Margaret Newton in the form of a shop and website. Keith and Margaret decided to retire and closed the Keighley shop and we took over the business in January 2005, which is now based in Darlington, County Durham.
Since taking over The Happy Cross Stitcher we have expanded the stock range, adding more manufacturers and different crafts as we went along.
In January 2008 we bought Russell House Tapestries, closely followed by Daisy Designs in June as we wanted to add a manufacturing string to our bow. Both companies were successful and have since passed into different hands.
In 2010 we created Rainy Day Designs, our own brand of designs ranging from simple cross stitch cards kits to our Premium Collection cross stitch chart packs.
So, if you are looking to buy cross stitch, tapestry, blackwork, knitting, crochet or embroidery, whether for yourself or a gift, why not browse our site?
If you can’t find what you are looking for or if you have any comments or suggestions contact us and we will do our very best to help.
Happy Stitching!
